Assuming of course that they work with the later kernels (which I'm
pretty sure they do) they aren't too bad. My chief concerns would
probably be speed of backup, and cost of media.

Speed may not be an issue. After all, it's not hard to just start
a cron job at 2am and have your machine backed up when you
wake up (of course, your backup has to fit on a tape).

Media cost might be. DDS (aka DAT) tapes seem to be much cheaper
than most or all of the alternatives. That was a factor in my
selection, and so I ended up with an HP 5000i internal SCSI DAT
drive, with 4 gig capacity, for about $500 or so. The tapes go
for about $5-6 apiece (I grabbed 10 of them when I got the
drive). Other media seem to go for $25-50 per cartridge.
