XFree86 and Permedia 2 and startx

I installed Linux 5.1 and found that XFree86 3.3.2 doesn't support Permedia
2, I then tried the xglint.rpm and xf86config off www.suse.com.
When I issue startx all I get is "." at bottom left of a grey screen.
ctrl-alt-backsp and ctrl-alt-del are ignored and I need to switch off m/c
to reboot.
Trying to capture output via startx &> startx.out doesn't give me anything,
prob'y cos the file is still open and the filesystem all gets fixed out at
the reboot.
Any suggestions ?
I believe the card manufacturer is apac.
