Apache : shtml ?

I've created a file essai.shtml 
In this file, there is a tag <!-- #echo var="DATE_LOCAL" --> 
When I try to display this variable, the browser shows me the html source!

I'm using Netscape 4.5 PR2. How do I configure Apache to recognize shtml
? Or,maybe Netscape ?
