Agreed, and there are lots of more appropriate places (web sites and
mailing lists in addition to newsgroups) where the finer points of this
can be studied and mulled over.
But: most of the reasons why Windows will tend to stick around have to
do with politics and inertia over OS techical merit.
Applications which run faster or mor reliably under Windows tend to do
so for reasons having to do with the apps themselves, not with the OS in
question. An app which has been well-optomized for DOS but poorly
ported to UNIX will run better on DOS. Case in point: FoxPro. Time
will improve this situation where Linux is concerned, and things are
already getting better than they were a few months ago.
Throughout history it has been the tendency of information to
disseminate. While the Windows/Linux "war" may be in doubt, the
eventual success of OpenSource over ClosedSource as a software
development paradigm seems to me to be a foregone conclusion.
