The easiest way is to start with the Official Redhat 5.2 Boxed Set.
The manual alone is worth the price. It tells you exactly what needs
to be done. This mailing list is half full of questions people can't
figure
out because they don't have that manual, so you decide.
Basically you boot from the 5.2 CD, or from the 5.2 boot floppy.
When it asks whether you want to UPGRADE or INSTALL, you
know what you want.
When it's done, you'll need to do a little fixup, like going through
all the *.rpmsave files (mostly in /etc), compare them to the
new versions of the file, and fix anything that the upgrade process
did not fix for you.

If it is a recent RedHat, it will say so on the login screens,
along with the version.
And, rpm -qa|grep redhat will also tell you the release number.
