Ick. I've got an extra printer (dot-matrix) and a newer Canon bubble
jet. I'm sort of thinking of selling either or both of them and getting
something better, like an HP deskjet or something.

What I suggest would be the following:
* take out 'defaults'. Having it there may overwrite explicit
settings you need.
* add uid= and gid= entries (the man page says that fat can
have these options, and I would surmise that applies as
well to vfat.) The thing is that vfat/fat doesn't know
anything about permissions, and the uid= and gid= entries
would be used to set initial values to something reasonable,
like rw-r--r--, which would allow the user read/write but
others would only be allowed to read.
