Thought I would post the very favorable results. The answer is yes, it
can be done.
Turns out this is all documented in the SCSI-Programming howto.
My only controler is an aging but reliable Adaptec 1542CF - if anyone
cares, but I don't think it matters.
My scanner device id is 6, so the command:
echo "scsi remove-single-device 0 0 6 0" > /proc/scsi/scsi
removed the device successfully. And the command:
echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 6 0" > /proc/scsi/scsi
adds the device.
