man termcap
man terminfo

(and the SEE ALSO pages they refer to).

Beware of tampering with /etc/termcap and/or /usr/share/terminfo/* files
unless you REALLY know what you are doing.  Which, by the sound of it, you
don't.  You have been warned.

Note that for X apps it is possible to use X resource settings to change
the "termcap" both generally and/or for specific applications.
