In /home/$username create a file called .fetchmailrc (notice the
period... it's necessary!)

This is what goes in the file (all on one line):
poll name.of.mail.server proto pop3 user username_on_mail_server is
local_user_name here pass password

then chmod 0644 .fetchmailrc and type fetchmail -v to verify it's
output.
