I know there are a lot of anti-windows people on the mailing list so
I hope I don't offend anyone by saying so but - Windows isn't going
to go away. Now you're probably wondering why I feel that way.

We tried it here at work. We were going to replace all of the
workstations with Sun Ultra 1 workstations. We bought all of the
unix versions of the apps, etc. Everything worked properly and
looked great. But people still didn't like it. It was "different".
You had to learn a different way of doing something. People didn't
want to learn a different way. They wanted to keep doing it the same
ol way, just faster. We even had people refusing to go to the new
system on the basis that they wouldn't be marketable unless they
use what everyone else uses.

As a different generation of computer users moves into the workplace,
maybe they will feel more comfortable with exploring. Things will
become more dynamic and people may end up using more operating systems
that just the windows operating system.

Of course, another aspect of it... I personally find that unix and
windows have their proper places. I use each based on what I'm doing.
I tend to leave unix as the workstation and windows as my preferred
desktop. I do actually prefer the windows interface. I have found
that most of the applications that I use work better under windows.
For example, Corel WordPerfect tends to run with a lot less hassles
and much faster under windows. That brings up another issue, system
speed. I've only really found one unix workstation that runs x-windows
apps at the speed equal to my PII400 and that was on an Ultra 60.
Definitely a lot more money - and you can do a lot more with it, but
for standard applications the windows box ends up being better.

I'd read/write this list if you start one: zztong@laxmi.ev.net
