xman v man problems.

Can anyone tell me why xman can't see everything that man can?
Specifically, xman can't see 1x and nx sections. Stupidly, this means
xman can't see the xman man page.
This is particularly frustrating as I have a little problem running man in
a terminal window: I just switched to the AfterStep manager and now find
that the highlighted colours show fine in nxterm - as long as I'm logged in
as root. If I log in as my user id, the highlight colour is black!
