I prefer to use the KDM manager (KDE replacement for XDM). I boot directly
into X, then choose what WM/environment I want to use when logging in.

The files involved here is /etc/inittab and /etc/X11/xdm/*. The setup can be
a bit toublesome on RH 51, so if you want, I can send the files to you.
