Excellent reply Jeff!

I'd just add this:

This is also possible to do if your ISP is using Bind-8.1.x by
configuring Bind to allow updates from your IP's (in combination
with authentication that is). Bind-8 has the capability to allow
dynamic updates without manually editing the configuration files.

The ISP would have to be fairly Bind-savvy to understand this
(mine is just beginning to test Bind-8...), but the protocols
and software are out there. I use Bind-8 internally (with
non-routable IP's) in combination with DHCP. DHCP updates our
DNS via scripts and soon (I hope) via direct calls that were
posted on the ISC DHCP mailing list a couple weeks ago (which
I'm testing).

I've published the scripts freely, which you could look through
and find the necessary syntax to make updates work... I'll
provide the scripts upon request.
