Well, right now at this day and age, this is exactly the problem. I love the
rpm install mechanism, but it gets increasingly difficult to get rpms for a
Red Hat Linux 4.2 system (libc5). While I know by now how to rebuild source
rpms and while I changed quite a few spec files to get that damned thing to
rebuild on my 4.2 system, I'm getting a bit impatient with the process...
Basically, while still using rpm for most installs, I've lost the advantage
of "ease of install", as I have to rebuild/reconfigure most rpms I'd like to
install.
The second problem is that it gets increasingly difficult to maintain the
integrity of the system while at the same time trying to play around with
newer software - upgrade a library here, change a setting there, whoops...
In most cases, these problems are resolvable, all right, but it's more
hassle...
These are (just as an example) my reasons to consider an upgrade. The
reason I didn't upgrade before was the long list of errata showing up on Red
Hat's web site for 5.0/5.1 shortly after the release date... ;-) (I'm not
counting security updates here, which, btw, are also still available for RHL
4.2, thanks to Red Hat for that).
So in a way, the "pressure to upgrade" can happen in the Linux world, too -
although in a very, very mild version, compared to the 'doze world.
Just my IRP0.02,
Thomas
