"The only three partitions you need... are /, swap, and /boot (and you
don't
need a /boot partition in many instances). Because of the way things are
added to the tree.. can you honestly say you are surprised at the amount
of
allocated data on your root partition?"
This is only somewhat true, you only need a root partition if you never
plan to have problems. Having / on a seprate partition has in many cases
helped me, the advantage to having /usr at least on a partition is that if
you install something that breaks the file system and it all goes under
/usr you can still try to salvage it. Ultimatly it's a matter of
preference, I have mine table set to the following...
/ = 650 MB
/home = 350 MB
/opt = 350 MB(StarOffice 5.0 and Netscape make a big foot print on you
disk)
/usr = 3.3 GB
With ths I've been able to mount /usr and fix config problems and still use
my normal kernel and modules, you can always fit everything on a boot and
root disk.
