Okay, in search of some xfree86 enlightenment... I'm running the SVGA
server at 1280x1024x16 on my Sony Multiscan 200GS monitor and Diamond
Viper V330 graphics card (that's the RIVA128 chip set) with 4MB ram.
When xdm starts up, it gives me, among other things:

(--) SVGA: PCI: NVidia/SGS-Thomson Riva128 rev 16, Memory @ 0xe4000000, 0xe6000000
(--) SVGA: RIVA128: Setting RGB weight to 555
(--) SVGA: chipset: RIVA128
(--) SVGA: videoram: 4096k
(**) SVGA: Using 16 bpp, Depth 15, Color weight: 555

Where does this "Depth 15" thing come from? The relevant lines from
my XF86Config file are:

---------
Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Sony Multiscan 200GS"
    HorizSync 30 - 85
    VertRefresh 50-120
    ModeLine "1280x1024" 135.00 1280 1320 1424 1664 1024 1027 1030 1064
    ModeLine "1024x768" 115.50 1024 1064 1256 1364 768 771 781 810 -hsync -vsync
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Driver "svga"
    Device "Diamond Viper V330"
    Monitor "Sony Multiscan 200GS"
    DefaultColorDepth 16 # 24 not supported for riva128 :-(
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Weight 555
        Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
EndSection
---------

I would never have noticed it myself, actually, but my wife runs
Afterstep, which was auto-sensing the color depth at 15 and looking
for files name /usr/share/afterstep/base.15bpp, which naturally it
couldn't find.

To keep her happy :-), I've symlinked ...15bpp to the ...16bpp
version, so afterstep will start up, but I'd really rather address the
problem itself.
