pgp will encrypt and password protect any file, including a zip,tar or
cpio
archive.
So will the program crypt, but it is known to be very weak.   You can
get these
from http://www.replay.com/redhat outside the US.

Or, you can get a free certificate from Verisign, etc. and mail the tar
archive
to yourself
with encryption turned on.  Netscape does this well on any OS.
