i've tried to set the permissions of pppd so that non root users can
invoke it.
i've been unsuccessful. i have a standalone machine, and as root
establishing a
ppp connection is of no consequence. the error message i receive when
trying to invoke pppd is:

pppd: must be root to run pppd, since it is not setuid-root.

i thought perhaps i needed to have a definition of pppd in /etc/passwd
with a well defined uid and then define a group such that non root users
can invoke pppd but this attempt has been unsuccesful so far.

any ideas?

regards,

jack
