RH 5.2: error in exec of second stage loader

I've downloaded and burned a RedHat 5.2 CD from ftp.cdrom.com.
Whether I boot from the CD, or use the install floppy, I get the same
error after CD-Rom initialization stage of the install on virtual console
#3:
* method selection completed
* state saved to /tmp
* error in exec of second stage loader :-(
* error:Permisson denied
My workaround is to boot with the install floppy, choose expert mode, and
force the loading of the supplemental floppy. Install then seems to
proceed normally.
Any ideas what could be causing the "error in exec of second stage loader
:-(" above?
