I have my Netscape/NT settings to 72 chars. What happened is that, while I was writing the message, I changed the font size... guess something strange happened... just one more bug, I supose.
I'll resend the message and or rephrase the questions, since I deduce from your answers that you did not fully understand my questions.

I installed 4 when it was out... later on the RedHat people released 5. I updated my system to this version at the appropriate time.

That surely did NOT happen with my old 486. It used the entire 32MB I had, not 14, nor 15 nor 16... all 32 MB, and free showed the correct value.

Ok, thankx... 2.0.36.
I did activate SMP... or else /proc/cpuinfo wouldn't show 2 CPUs would it?
On intel chipset, I'm not sure... but isn't intel the only chip manufacturer for intel SMP specs for x86???

setserial DOES show a concrete UART for cua0 (mouse) and cua1 (UPS), but not for cua2 (modem).

I downloaded the latest SVGA_Server release at ftp.xfree.org, doesn't work either. As I said, I think this must be related to the 16MB mem problem.

I don't want to use NT, but if I cannot get linux to work like I want it to, then I'll use linux for just the stuff it lets me.

I know that.
Listen, I'm not criticising linux, nor the fantastic effort the developers are doing, I'm just seeking for help on installing my favorite OS.

I DO read the docs. They included:
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/docs/README.MGA
man XF86Config
/usr/doc/isapnptools/...
man setserial
man pppd
/usr/src/linux/Documentation (found nothing on mem except mem<something>.txt, and didn't help me very much on why linux is using only lower 16MB)
...
You know, it's just a bunch of it, maybe I missed something... and the questions I formulated I think must be very simple to someone who is an expert on it, I guess.
