You probably need to play around with your Xresources to get it looking how
you like it.
See the man pages for X, xterm, and nxterm, then put the appropriate
settings in your .Xdefaults file.
(Actually, you can fiddle with the settings in it, then try them by loading
them with the xrdb command).
