In /usr/src/linux edit the Makefile and remove the # from the line "SMP=1"

It its highly recommended (accoriding to the SMP FAQ) that you disable apm
support if you are going to compile for multi-processor.  (I have APM
enabled in mine, but the only "part" of the apm package I have enabled is
soft-off.)
