Hi
I ficed this problem on my system which runs redhat 5.2 with the same Xserver
as you.
I eventually narrowed the problem down to making sure that in your XF86Config
file the following options are the only ones enabled for XKB
XkbKeycodes "xfree86"
XkbTypes "default"
XkbCompat "default"
XkbSymbols "us(pc101)"
XkbGeometry "pc"
XkbRules "xfree86"
XkbModel "pc101"
XkbLayout "gb"
(Obviously you might want to change the XkbLayout)
I then noticed that it started complaining about being unable to find a file
in the directory /var/X11R6/xkb, which is because the location of that
directory is /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb, so a symbolic link between the two fixes
the problem.
On my system this resolved the backspace key problem under netscape. This fix
does not seem to be specific to your video card, although all the machines I
have had to fix for this problem (3 or 4 machines) have been using what were
at least originally, the XSuse drivers.
