xquake is a little limitted, apparently.

You can use command line parameters to alter the size, or just resize
the window, but a large xquake window runs slow. You can help matters if
X is set up to use cntrl-alt-(+/-) to change video resolutions ( a
320x200 window looks better on a 640x480, or less, display)
I found it better to download the SVGA versions like squake and lsdoom
(which is a very nice doom, even lxdoom in X)
I now run squake in SVGA on a separate virtual console separate from X.
It's faster that way, and squake has console options to change video
resolution from 320x200 to 800x600 on my S3Trio (tho my P120
can't run many fps at over 320x400 :-)
Still don't have mouse control when not root tho, must work on that...
Now that I have Doom and Quake running under Linux, it's making my 95
partion seem more and more like a waste of disk space.
