Route Edits won't stick

I am attempting to add a route via the route command for a second
NIC. When I finish editing, the added route is just the way I want it
when I run "route". However, once I reboot the machine, the new
information
is gone and the route table reverts to its original status. Is this
broken in RH 5.x?
I am running RH 5.0 and 5.1 with 2.0.35 and problem is same on both
boxes.
BTW, the result is the same using the control panel tools.
