Your pppd needs to set the default route for you,
to go through the ppp link to the internet, but only while you
are connected. If you are running
a caching nameserver, then you can and should put 127.0.0.1 alone
in /etc/resolv.conf. Otherwise, you might as well turn off your
DNS.
To get a caching nameserver running or RedHat 5.1, I installed
the bind and caching-nameserver rpms, that's all,
no configs required.
It still works fine after upgrading to RedHat5.2 too.
