Hi everyone... see if you can figure this out:

the symptoms (not necessarily related):

 - the hostname (shown before the login prompt) ocassionaly
changes to the full machine name (rambler.lafayettehigh.org).

 - when I try to use shadow passwords (with pwconv), every login
attempt is given a 'Login incorrect' message

 - I have a CGI script that mails e-mails form data. It always goes
to the user 'nobody,' regardless of the address the script tells it

 - the return path of messages sent through my web-based e-mail
system are all 'nobody@rambler,' sending any mail addressing
errors there instead of back to the sender

 - when restarting (/sbin/shutdown -r now), there is no warning like
there used to be. It just gives a prompt right after the command. I
log out, and it has been as much as six hours before the system is
online again

Any ideas to this? Perhaps I don't understand the difference in the
'hostname' command and the file /etc/HOSTNAME and
domainname. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

 - jason gilstrap
