I do not know the GIS Grass 4.2.
But I can say to you that I have tried two different digitizers at
linux and both worked fine for me:
- Calcomp Drawingboard III.
- Wacom UltraPad A4 (the one I use right now).

I have used them with Microstation 95 for linux and also like a normal
cursor instead of the mouse. Microstation 95 brings a driver that lets
you use both the mouse and the digitizer at the same time.

I can provide you some additional information of how I did installed it 
if you need it.
