It is considerd a security risk have the current directory (.) in you path. 
The general idea is that someone could put a trojan horse named ls somewhere 
on you system, and when you tried to do a ls it would get executed, perhaps 
doing nasty things.

With that said, edit your $HOME/.bash_profile and add . to the END of your 
path. this is considered safer.
