The kernel that comes stock with RH should run fine on a Cyrix, AMD, or intel
chip, 386 or later. The difference will come the first time you decide that you
need to recompile. Once upon a time, it was advised that those with non-intel
chips always select the "386" processor type, even if they had one of the
non-intel 486, 586 or 686 chips, since the "knockoff" chips don't always
implement all of the features that the kernel expects to find in the intel
version. I don't know if that's still the case; word around the campfire lately
has been that the non-intels have gotten better in their later iterations.
Moral: if the stock RedHat compilation of the kernel doesn't suit you, play with
it until you find something that does, and playing with it might include trying
several different processor settings until you find the one that works best.
But I don't think that you will ever have to get different source code; just
different settings at compile time should be adequate.
