Std kernel config question

I presume that the settings for the "standard" kernel - that is
if a full install is undertaken - are those to which xconfig (or
menuconfig) default. In other words, is it the case that if one (using
xconfig for example) saved a configuration file without making any
modifications then that configuration file could be considered as the
"standard" kernel configuration file.
It seems to me that the set of defaults in xconfig are quite liberal. With
few exceptions these defaults would accomodate the majority of hardware
configurations employed to run RH (or Linux generally)
comment anyone ?
