With all due respect this is not good advice. Whenever people report
having uninstalled and reinstalled X to solve some problem, they've done
it in desperation because they don't know what the real trouble is, and
all it ever seems to do is waste time. Besides, X is distinct from its
window managers. If AnotherLevel works, then fvwm2 works, and X is not
broken; your method for starting a window manager is.

Create the file ~/.Xclients to start your window manager. Make sure you
give it execute permission. Make sure it starts by declaring a shell.
Make sure it finishes by executing a window manager. If you use #!/bin/sh
at the start of the file, use 'exec <window manger executable>' to finish.
I'll bet you've got all that, in which case I suggest the following steps:

    % cd
    % ln -s .Xclients .xinitrc
    % ln -s .Xclients .xsession

Try and see if that helps.
