I've done this several times, setup a Linux gateway to the Internet for
existing Intranets.  Anyways, its easier than it may seem.  Sendmail (is
not preconfigured btw) is all you need for mail, just redirect it (back
into your intranet) at your internal mail server (do you have one?). 
Point your windows mail clients to your intranets mail server... voila. 
Without a intranet mail server, there is more administration on the
gateway, but still easily done.

Never used qmail <shrug>, sendmail does it all.
