It's funny, I've had the exact opposite experience...

The one thing I have done is always made sure that I was using a video card
I knew worked with XFree beforehand....

The S3's have been particularly easy for me to set up. Though devoid of some
of the nifty features of the newer AGP cards XF86config and Xconfigurator
always seem to have an easy time with them...

In all cases I've used Digitally Controlled monitors from 15" thru 21".
