rpm is a bit finicky (and I wish they'd change this) with respect to
when it needs the whole RPM name (e.g., gcc-2.7.2-1.i386.rpm) vs.
just the package name (e.g., gcc-2.7.2-1). For instance, I have the
egcs RPM here, and if I do an rpm -qi egcs-1.0.3.i386.rpm it says the
package is not installed, but if I do an rpm -qi egcs-1.0.3, it gives
me the information.

I imagine the scenario is the same with erase, install and other
functional modes of rpm. So, if you think the package is there and
rpm says it isn't, try omitting the .i386.rpm part of the filename. If
that doesn't work, and if you think that the RPM database is hosed, you
can use the --rebuilddb option, and rebuild the RPM database. But don't
think that you have to reinstall :).
