I can tell you external parallel devices have a
major bottleneck on CPU time.
IDE also has to be babysat by the CPU. Scsi uses very little
CPU time, and is therefore much more friendly
to multi tasking - ie browsing the net while you burn
your CD.
With a parallel CD writer, you can expect a coaster
if you try to do much else, also for IDE but not as bad.
So, with either of these, plan to dedicate an entire machine
when you burn a CD.
I have seen SCSI CD writers for $360 Canadian ($235 US).
You can get a reasonable SCSI controler for $80 US.
This will end up being much more satisfying, especially if you
get a SCSI CD reader also. Then you can copy CD's directly
from original to blank, in one step, while using the machine
for other things at the same time.
So I'd say if you want a WinModem class CD burner, parallel
or IDE. The nice ones are SCSI.
