Fred gave you the correct information.
Linux can print to Jetdirect's via the spooler and it works quite =
well....
The MANUAL setup for BSD printing in the Jetdirect manual applies quite =
well to Linux. I set up my printer the first time using this recipie... =
later I discovered that only the "RAW" mode is required, as the print =
filters are pretty smart about text printing...
Anyway things to watch out for:
1) You should REALLY set up a DNS on the machine you are going to use =
for this, at worst you need to put the PRINTER's IP into the /etc/hosts =
file.
2) Once you have correctly done this, and restarted the Linux box, you =
MUST be able to telnet into the printer's Jetdirect card. If you cannot =
things will not work...
Assuming you have an entry like this..
10.0.0.20 hplaser4.mydomain.com hplaser4 hp4
then you should be able to type "telnet hplaser4" and get back...
---
Connected to hplaser4.mydomain.com.
Escape character is '^]'
Please type [Return] two times, to initialize telnet configuration

Once you get to this point, all you need to do is make the new printcap =
entry.
I prefer to let the GUI "printtools" do it for me.. as a local printer. =
This creates a good printcap entry, sets up the spool files, etc... all =
in one step. The problem will be that it will NOT work until you =
manually edit the printcap to point to the printer...
By changing two lines:
lp|hp4:\
:lp=3D:\
:rm=3Dhplaser4:\
Note the backslashes are important. They tell printcap that the entry =
continues...
Once done, you can go back to the GUI tools and send a test page to the =
printer.
Nothing to it.
