HylaFAX and pppd problem

I installed HylaFAX 4.0p12-3rh5 over the weekend.
I noticed that when Faxgetty is running, I can not open the ppp conection
over the same phone.
ifup ppp0 begins to dial the phone but about 30 sec later, the moden is
reset and faxgetty sets the moden back to call waiting. It seems as if
faxgetty is not checking the lock before taking over.
Another think that makes me wonder is that ifup ppp0 locks the modem
device but maybe Faxgetty is locking the cua device.
Is this normal o have I made a mistake ? I though from the documentation
that HylaFAX is compatible with In/out traffic ?
This is Linux 5.0
