Thanks.  I will try this as soon as the current report finishes; we've
been able to verify that it isn't the report that's bad, it's the
display methods I've tried.

I've been using nxterm to log in to the box that's taking the reports. 
When I use any other method (xterm, regular virtual term on a Linux box,
even Windoze telnet) I can view the file more or less okay.  less still
has those funny characters, but tail doesn't freeze.

Even in nxterm, if I give less the '-r' option the control characters go
away and the report looks like what I expect, albeit with line breaks in
the wrong place, which is to be expected.
