sachin,
If you don't want to change your video card:
In the device section of XF86config, put the following entry:
Chipset "sis86c205"
and try startx. If it crashes with an error, try once more.
The XF86_SVGA server I have (3.3.2) does not support SiS cards beyond
6205, so you have to coax it into believing that's the one you have.

I was having the same problem with my SiS6215C. When I made the above
change, and did startx, it crashed on the first try, screaming "unknown
PCI device"
But, when I do startx again, it ran okay. (In fact, with 1 MB VRAM, I
got it to go to 1024x768 res., whereas Win95 - which has a driver for this
very card, refused to go beyond 800x600 :-)
3-4 of my friends have had the same experience. The only difference is, on
some m/cs you startx crashes only on the first try after boot-up, on
others, you need 2 attempts always.
The strange thing is, if I ifconfig my ne2000-compatible ethernet card on
boot-up, startx works on the first go! You might want to get yourself an
ethernet card, as opposed to changing your video card :-) i have no clue
as to why this happens - if someone could enlighten me, I'd be grateful.
I should point out that the above change in XF86config did not work for
the SiS6232 my friend had. I haven't been able to find any drivers for
this, though I checked out xfree86.org.
If someone knows where we can find a driver for this, or how to fix this
problem, it would be a great help to several people - SiS being one of the
popular cards in north India.
Vaibhav Vaish.
