Hi Tom,
I have the same problem with my XFree86 as well, but I have an ATI Mach 64
video card in my computer. The black screen problem on my XFree86 came
from 2 conflicts. The first conflict was that the ATI apeture shared
memory caused the blank screen, I just disable that feature in my ATI
configuration. Once I did that I can do 'X -probeonly', it used to hang on
the black screen. The second conflict was my monitor frequencies and the
frequencies in the Xconfig file are not match. These are the steps of what
I did, after I disable my video card's apature shared memory :
1) at the console prompt : run <Xconfigurator>
2) select the appro. devices for the your computer, if you monitor is not
listed in the device listing, then use custom. For frequencies selection
when in doubt, use 60Hz is a save bet. You know, select <40-70> for your
monitor and for your screen use <60Hz>
3) after exit out of the Xconfigurator, at the console prompt : run < X
-showconfig >
* this will show you your video configuration
4) after X -showconfig, at the console prompt : run < X -probeonly >
* from here you should be able to see at what freqencies your monitor
is able to handle
5) use this info, you should compare the clock frequencies that 'X
-probeonly' showed, to the clock frequencies in the Xconfig file, it should
match. I think it is under device section 'My Video Card' and screen
section at the end of the file.
I hope this help. Let me know if it works.
