Try adding the command to start the menu to ~/.bashrc. Have you tried
setting the app as the shell? Just because it wasn't design as a shell
doesn't mean it won't work, though there may be security risks involved...

I assume cat is still present, cat <file> | more should let you see enough
to know what is going on.
