Good day, all,
I've had problems in the past installing a package that depended
on another package - how does one find out what package is needed? Most
of the time, it can be figured out, but sometimes it's not clear.
I've put together a simple script that might help. The
makerpmfilelist script simply outputs what each package in the current
directory provides and what files are in each package. Take a look at the
output to see.
When you're having trouble figuring out what needs to be installed
to satisfy a dependancy, take a look at the list you've created from the
base distribution, the powertools directory, any downloaded rpm's, etc,
and search through the file until you find what's needed. Scroll up until
you find the name of the package that has this resource, then install this
package.
To use it, change to a directory that has some RPM's. Run:
makerpmfilelist >>rh51-provideslist
If these rpms are on a CD-rom, redirect the output to some
writeable media, like:
makerpmfilelist >>~/my-filelist
If you just want to see the output once, try:
makerpmfilelist | less
If you want to specify only certain RPM's or they're in another
directory, put the filespec on the command line, like:
makerpmfilelist /usr/src/source/sq*.rpm >>~/my-source-rpms
You can build up an output file with information from more than
one directory by running it multiple times.
Donnie - I'd be honored if this output could be included for the
redhat contrib directories, powertools, distributions, etc. What do you
think? If you're not involved in this stuff, could you forward it on to
someone who is?
Cheers,
- Bill
