As others have said, I don't think it's necessarily a minicom problem. 
Which version of minicom do you have?

My own machines have the minicom-1.81-4 rpm, which contains xminicom,
and came from the RedHat 5.1 cd.  It works fine for me.  Have you tried
cu?  If cu has problems as well, you could eliminate minicom as the
culprit.

Do you have a top window open when you try this?  I ask because it's
possible that something is running away with your tty line, and might
show up in top (long shot but it's where I always start).

How about some problem history: did it work and then start to have
problems, or is this the initial attempt with this installation?
