I'm in somewhat the same position - not *quite* as much of a novice, 
I'm finding the QUE Using Linux 3rd Edition to be fairly useful.
The O'Reilly general Linux book doesn't help matters as much; you might
find that their more specific books are useful. I kind of like the 
Network Admin book they produce.
