Modifying RedHat 5.1 Install disk?

Hi all. I'm hoping someone out there might have some pointers on this,
or know where I can find more information. I am ordering the RedHat 5.1
Boxed CD set today (I've been running off a downloaded copy to date).
Problem is, I intend to install RedHat 5.1 on a system that will *ONLY*
be running drives connected to a DPT DAC960 RAID SCSI controller.
The deal is this: the DAC960 drivers are not part of the stock 2.0.xx
kernels, and have to be added. Therefore, the RedHat 5.1 Boot floppy
image does not have the driver I need to see the hard disk I want to
install to. Additionally, the installation isn't going to install a
kernel image with the drivers or modules, or create the new entries I
need in /dev (this doesn't use the standard /dev/sd? scsi disk entries).
This is sort of a chicken-before-the-egg situation.
What I need to find out is HOW can I make modifications to a copy of the
RedHat installation and/or modules disks? Is there some way to extract
the floppy images to a directory that I can work with, and then rebuild
the floppy images once I make my tweaks?
I know the "brute" force approach would be to throw an IDE hard disk or
something into the system long enough to install, build a new kernel,
and then copy everything to the RAID drive array. However, I also need
to know how to do this, because I want to have a modified copy of the
RedHat "rescue" disk as well.
Thanks for any advice!
