basic x window question

I'm very new to Linux, and I've been having trouble getting the x
server to run. I've narrowed it down to my video card, which is a
Diamond Stealth 3D 4000 Turbo. While it uses the ViRGE GX/2 chipset,
I'm unable to use the generic driver for that card. Which brings me to
my question: Is there anything I could use that would give me at least a
basic graphical interface? It doesn't have to be pretty or anything.
