rpc.mountd and rpc.nfsd won't start

Hi everybody
My /var/log/netconf.log tells the story:
Starting NFS service
Executing: /usr/sbin/rpc.mountd
* Cannot register service: RPC: Unable to receive; errno = Connection refused
* return 1
Executing: /usr/sbin/rpc.nfsd
* Cannot register service: RPC: Unable to receive; errno = Connection refused
* return 1
.....
ll /usr/sbin/rpc.mountd
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 39844 Aug 28 10:48 rpc.mountd
ll /usr/sbin/rpc.nfsd
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 54300 Aug 28 10:48 rpc.nfsd
Hmm, permissions looks OK to me.
Some system information:
$ uname --all
Linux hz0032 2.0.32 #1 Thu Apr 16 11:25:50 EDT 1998 i686 unknown
Redhat 5.0
Does anybody have an inkling what's wrong ? Any additional info
needed to come up with a solution ?
