take a look at xvidtune, which might help you out.
alternatively, you might have the same problem as I did with an old
monitor in that trying to drive a 56hz monitor at 60hz produced a stable
picture halfway off the screen.
of the two, I've very much recommend you check your monitor specs before
using xvidtune...
