This doesn't answer your question directly, but what is to stop you from
getting a SSL key for each of the domains you are serving?  As I
understand it part of the purpose of the SSL key is to ensure you're
talking to the host you think you are.

if you want to test that out, I know there are a few CAs who will give
free short-term keys that you can play with.  Often they're limited to 14
days or so.
